We love Clifford The Big Red Dog! Every year, we spend a couple of weeks reading as many Norman Bridwell Clifford stories as we can fit in. We try to incorporate Clifford into as many of our school activities as possible to keep the kids excited about the stories!
Some of the activities we do with Clifford:
- Take Clifford home for a sleepover/adventure
Every morning I write a student’s name on the board next to Clifford. They are always so excited to come in and try and see if they can read whose turn it is. This helps build excitement for the student whose turn it is for the day!
- Clifford writing and drawing activities (see below)
I send home these pages in plastic page protectors for parents to complete with students. After spending some time with their stuffed Clifford, students draw a picture of something they did together. Some examples of things my students have drawn/written: eat spaghetti, play Xbox, do my homework, have a sleepover, and play connect four!
I also give parents the opportunity to take a picture of their little one with Clifford and either email it to me or send it to me through the REMIND APP. If you don’t have it…check it out! It’s an amazing way to communicate with parents quickly and efficiently without giving out your cell phone number.
- Comparing Clifford’s adventures
After reading each story, we draw a picture in one of the bubbles and write a couple of words to help us remember his adventure. For example, we just read Clifford The Firefighter and drew a picture of him helping rescue people from the burning building. This will help us compare all of the adventures at the end of the unit.
